Working as a Motor Vehicle Mechanic involves working on passenger and commercial vehicles. There are two main functions of this job – to fix problems and repair vehicles and to carry out maintenance such as servicing, MOT and oil changes.

Generally Motor Mechanics work indoors in garages or specialist centres. The work is interesting and involves using specialist tools and advanced diagnostic technology. Working conditions are usually very relaxed although it is worth bearing in mind that they can often also be quite dirty.

Qualified Motor Mechanics are highly skilled and always in demand, they have good rates of pay and have normal working hours.

If you are interested in cars, in general and have good levels of fitness and a keen eye for detail then Motor Mechanics then this could be the perfect course for you.

.What will I learn?

Joining the Motor Vehicle course at Ridgemond will give you all the basic skills to start your career in Motor Mechanics. Combining both practical and theory sessions you will learn engine fault diagnosis and routine maintenance, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems fault diagnosis, routine maintenance, electrical and electronic systems and transmission fault diagnosis.

.What are my career prospects?

There are numerous opportunities for qualified motor mechanics - vehicle manufacture, design, maintenance, body repair are a few examples.

There are opportunities to work in local garages, national chains, breakdown services or supporting police and fire services. You could also specialise in Formula Motorsports or set up your own business, employing and training other Motor Mechanics.

.What are the entry requirements?

You will not need any formal qualification to join the course, though a mature and sensible outlook plus good stamina and an interest in motor vehicles is useful.

The course is free of charge and in certain cases you may be eligible for help towards your travel costs.

Once you have successfully completed the training you will be awarded the Level One Certificate in Motor Vehicle Mechanics as well as certificates in Functional Skills, Personal and Social Development and Employability.
